The chemicals used to purify water in treatment plants require mitigation devices designed to ensure the safety of operators and surrounding communities. A proactive solution is ChlorTainer, a high-pressure capture and return to process vessel offered in a variety of configurations to accommodate one-ton, double-ton and double or single 150-pound chemical containers for process. According to Rudy Caparros, COO of TGO Technologies/ChlorTainer, the secondary containment vessels offer safe technology for chemical processing and leak mitigation by preventing a release before it ever happens.
“If the container should leak, all chemicals are contained within the vessel and processed at a normal rate, so no hazardous waste is generated,” says Caparros. “All of the chemical is used, and no hazardous waste is generated. Scrubber systems, fans, pumps, tanks or mechanical systems are not required.”
Not only does it address risk management considerations, ChlorTainer enhances site security, and provides fail-safe protection for plant operators. The ChlorTainer Ton vessel is ideal for large volume use, as it is built to accommodate a standard one-ton container and comes with a two-bolt chain drive door that opens and closes in less than a minute. It also comes with a scale, and the choice of a movable or fixed loader to best fit the installation. According to Caparros, the container is placed on the loader system and then easily rolled into the ChlorTainer vessel.
“Whether installed at pump stations, in residential neighborhoods, or at water and wastewater treatment plants, ChlorTainer Ton vessels deliver the highest level of protection against an accidental chemical release,” he says. “They can provide safe containment not only for chlorine gas, but for sulfur dioxide and anhydrous ammonia as well.”
Vessels can be installed indoors or even located in an open-air structure as long as it provides shelter from direct sunlight and rain. ChlorTainer vessels are designed to provide dependable operation with minimal annual maintenance and have a life expectancy of no less than 100 years. With the same functionality as ChlorTainer, the company’s newest product, ChlorTanker, is a pressure housing solution built to ASME code, designed to contain potential leaks for bulk tank storage.
“Most solutions are reactive and are designed to respond after a chemical release has occurred, but ChlorTainer is different,” says Caparros. “In the event of a leak, the gas is safely contained within and put directly into process. There’s no chemical waste, no need for operators to suit up in protective gear, and no entry into a hazmat environment, ensuring the highest level of safety for both the operators and the surrounding community.”
