Water treatment facility managers can enhance their maintenance plans through predictive and preventive maintenance. Sensaphone’s Sentinel PRO remote monitoring system helps them achieve that end. The system’s advanced capabilities enable water treatment personnel to detect changes in the operational environment and potential equipment issues before they lead to costly failures, helping to ensure continuous uptime and reducing disruptions at locations such as remote pump stations.

“Users need to know that everything is okay in their pump stations, but it’s not very cost-effective to have an employee check them every day or multiple times per day during tough conditions,” says Dave DeFusco, vice president of engineering at Sensaphone. “In the past, remote monitoring devices were totally independent from any of the instrumentation at the site. Now a Sentinel PRO can pull data from an existing PLC and make all of its data available remotely to view, data log and set alarm thresholds.”

For predictive maintenance the Sentinel PRO system’s real-time monitoring and alert features detect early warning signs of equipment malfunctions. The system also identifies changes in conditions like temperature and humidity. By analyzing data trends and detecting anomalies, facility managers can address minor issues before they escalate into major problems, reducing repair costs and extending equipment lifespan.

“The Sentinel Pro is unique in that it can monitor up to 12 digital or analog sensors independent from existing sensors at the installation site, while also tapping into a PLC to pull data from the controller,” says DeFusco. “The battery backup will keep the device running in the event of a power failure and the monitored cloud connection will alert users if the ethernet or cellular connection is lost.”

The system also supports preventive maintenance, a scheduled approach in which facility personnel perform regular inspections and servicing at predetermined intervals to prevent unexpected failures. It provides continuous remote monitoring of critical parameters, allowing teams to verify the condition of their equipment and confirm that scheduled maintenance is effectively preventing breakdowns.

“Customers appreciate the ease of use, the security and peace of mind,” says DeFusco. “Of course, they don’t enjoy being notified during off hours when something does go wrong. However, it’s much better than the alternative of clocking in to work on Monday morning and dealing with a problem that’s existed for a while.”
