Methane detectors in wastewater treatment plants are critical for monitoring combustible gas, ensuring safety and mitigating environmental impact. The Huberg LASER One is a powerful portable methane detector from QED Environmental Systems that is ideal for both underground and aboveground wastewater applications.

Built around LASER-based tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology, the LASER One provides fast and precise readings at levels as low as 1 ppm, with zero cross-sensitivity to other gases. With a response time of below 2 seconds, technicians are able to accurately pinpoint the location of leaks during walkover surveys, making it suitable for utility and pipeline network surveys, leak detection in biogas plants, emergency response teams, and landfill and remediation site monitoring.

“The LASER One is built with the needs of technicians working in the field in mind — it’s fast, accurate and has been designed specifically for the outdoor environment,” says James Jones, head of gas analyser and detection products at QED. “It aims to make methane detection as simple as possible — minimal downtime, no additional devices required and no difficulty generating reports. Operators need only walk their route, and it will handle the rest.”

The unit features a rugged IP65/NEMA4 enclosure, with the entire device weighing under 3 pounds, allowing it to be easily carried by a sole operator. It warms up in as little as 30 to 60 seconds and features a field-swappable 10-hour battery, providing enough power for a full working day and minimizing the need for back-to-base charging. ATEX Zone 1 certification allows the instrument to be used in hazardous environments, with an operational range between negative 13 and 122 degrees F.

Equipped with GPS, Bluetooth and QED’s bespoke PROSoft software, the LASER One allows users to easily manage data and generate highly accurate reports for compliance, with the seamless transfer of readings to a PC, tablet or mobile device for reporting and analysis. It can be used for up to two years before it requires factory calibration, which is handled through the QED Express servicing program.

“The LASER One is placed to deliver a step-change in the way that the industry approaches methane detection,” says Jones. “It is the all-in-one solution to ensure quick, accurate and hassle-free results.”
