Olivia Woolery joined Monterey One Water in California with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and summer internships at a commercial lab. After two years, she became supervisor of the analytical laboratory, leading a staff of seven. She’s committed to helping others achieve similar success. She wants to establish certification training resources for the greater lab community; she applauds trainees when they succeed.

Her influences: The peers I’ve worked with in the water and wastewater field. I’ve learned something valuable from each of them, whether technical knowledge or professional perspective. They motivate me to continue growing and to hold myself to a high standard.

On the job: I serve as the technical manager for the lab, ensuring permit compliance and planning future projects in the laboratory that support plant operations. I represent the lab at agency and regional meetings.

What makes it exciting? It’s motivating to know that my work has a direct impact on my community, my neighbors and the sustainability of local resources. I live in our service area, so I see firsthand how our tertiary and advanced treatment projects improve water resources and protect the environment.

Sources of pride: I’m proud to know that the data we produce directly protects public health and the environment. I’m also proud of what our lab can do and excited to see how we will grow in the coming years.

Looking ahead: I plan to get my Drinking Water Treatment, Distribution and Environmental Compliance Inspector certificates to expand my knowledge beyond the lab and gain a stronger understanding of the treatment and compliance side. It will allow me to better connect lab data to plant performance and regulatory requirements.

Advice to young professionals: Say “yes” to opportunities, even if you’re unsure where they may lead. Every experience builds your skills and perspective. Being open to growth is key to long-term success in this field.

The boss’s view: Olivia has done an exceptional job transitioning to lab supervisor during a challenging time with the expansion of our Advanced Water Purification Facility and the associated permit update. She champions communication and continuous improvement and has improved lab capabilities by outlining expectations and increasing the team’s skill set.
