The large space requirement, low efficiency, and high cost of the traditional activated sludge process have caused many municipalities to look into conversion to a membrane bioreactor. Now Smith & Loveless is offering a solution that makes that conversion easier than ever — the TITAN MEM-BOX.

The packaged factory-built membrane system is designed to quickly and easily transform activated processes into fully functional MBRs, elevating conventional wastewater treatment plants to cutting-edge water resource recovery facilities by improving plant capacity and effluent quality, implementing water reuse to counter water scarcity and meeting population growth and tightening permit demands.

“It’s designed for existing treatment plants with conventional activated sludge biological processes that are failing to meet effluent quality requirements and/or needing capacity expansion by integrating the new MBR tank with existing concrete process structures,” says William Flores, vice president, municipal systems for Smith & Loveless. “An example would be an SBR plant that needs expansion due to flow growth, can use the MEM-BOX while converting the two existing SBR tanks to aeration tanks, completely transforming the WRRF to an MBR facility. This product can also be applied in industrial process wastewater schemes, and in new treatment plants with the field-erected Model R OXIGEST design for the process tank.”

Designed for both existing and newly proposed plants, the TITAN MEM-BOX membrane system eliminates the need for constructing additional treatment basins while streamlining the design process. This approach drastically reduces project time and costs associated with concrete tank construction. The factory-built and -tested system arrives ready to be integrated into the treatment scheme to produce superior effluent and achieve biological nutrient removal.

“This product innovation applies to municipal treatment plants with flows above 100,000 gpd up to 2 mgd,” says Flores. “For flows under 100,000 gpd the complete TITAN MBR is available.”

The TITAN MEM-BOX comes with integral hollow-fiber or flat-sheet membranes (depending upon the application). With intuitive QUICKSMART PLC controls and plant automation, which includes automatic membrane cleaning, it is designed to make operation and maintenance easy.

“There’s a need for plug and play ‘membrane zones’ to augment existing activated sludge processes that are needing higher capacity and/or improved effluent quality, but lack the funds for civil design and construction costs that come from traditional industry approaches,” says Flores. “Because the TITAN MEM-BOX targets smaller flows, it’s ideal for those municipalities and commercial facilities that need a cost-effective solution.”
