In today’s age of environmental consciousness, sustainability has become an undeniable part of our everyday lives. We see attempts to reduce the carbon footprint in not only the products we use, but also the food we consume. But there’s one vital area which has taken large steps toward sustainability that many may not realize — the water coming out of their taps.
Granular activated carbon is often the preferred filtration media across several conventional municipal plants as it offers excellent mechanical filtration of particulate matter and organic compounds. The high adsorption qualities of activated carbon filters also remove any poor taste or foul odor in the water. AqueoUS Vets, a company focused on the removal of PFAS and CECs, has taken the idea of sustainable carbon water filtration media a step further with the introduction of EcoCarb.
EcoCarb media is produced from the byproducts of other manufacturing processes, so there’s no traditional mining and minimal processing involved, which provides a lower overall carbon footprint, according to Mirka Wilderer, Ph.D, president and CEO of AqueoUS Vets. She says EcoCarb is friendly to the environment and offers equivalent performance, eliminating contaminants from drinking water. Each EcoCarb Media can be selected for the specific removal of contaminates based on water quality goals.
“At AqueoUS Vets, we are meeting today’s water challenges and treating tomorrow’s emerging concerns,” says Wilderer. “We are proud to provide a domestically produced bituminous carbon that is environmentally friendly and has lived up to the gold standard in side-by-side comparisons with the competition.”
EcoCarb is produced in three distinct processes:
- EcoCarb 1240BA is produced from bituminous coal sourced from a remediated coal refuse site. This, says Wilderer, provides a lower pressure drop, reducing energy costs.
- EcoCarb 1230C and 1240C is produced from a renewable source, coconut shells, which remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during the growing stage.
- EcoCarb 1240LDX and 830LDX is a low-density sub-bituminous coal byproduct extracted during the manufacturing process of a pigment.
“Using EcoCarb is friendly to the environment and offers superior performance eliminating contaminants from drinking water,” says Wilderer. “Each EcoCarb Media is selected for the specific water quality and use case.”
