Wastewater is tough on grinder cutters. Damaging abrasion wear and metal corrosion are caused by daily gritty material and acidic conditions in sewage. The combination of an abrasive and corrosive environment accelerates the loss of cutter material, resulting in the loss of cutter thickness and tooth edges.

Traditionally, there is a trade-off between choosing a material for abrasive environments and corrosive environments. Hard alloy steel has been the traditional choice of material for abrasive environments. Unfortunately, alloy steel is not a corrosion-resistant metal. The corrosion-resistant metal choice has been stainless steel but unfortunately, it has low abrasion resistance. Cutter material is typically selected based on the environment to which it will be exposed to optimize its performance and maximize cutter life. Regrettably, choosing a material suitable for one environment but not the other often leads to dissatisfaction with the cutter life.

Monster Metal is JWC’s solution to this problem — a steel alloy with superior wear resistance and excellent metal corrosion protection. Now you don’t have to choose between corrosion resistance or hardness. Monster Metal offers both, resulting in cutters that last longer in a gritty, corrosive wastewater environment.

What is Monster Metal?

JWC Monster Metal is an abrasion and corrosion-resistant metal alloy. It is a steel alloy with the right balance of carbon for abrasion resistance and chromium for corrosion resistance treated to enhance the overall strength at the molecular level. It has a Rockwell HRC of 55-60 which is as hard as or harder than most alloy steel cutters used on grinders in the municipal market. Alloy steel has been the standard material choice for abrasive environments. Furthermore, Monster Metal has a higher chromium content that is typically associated with stainless steel. Stainless steel has been the material of choice for corrosive environments. It’s the combination of the abrasion resistance of alloy steel and the corrosion resistance of stainless steel that makes it unique.

When should Monster Metal be used?

In a highly corrosive and highly abrasive environment, the typical alloy steel cutter exhibits faster wear. The corrosive environment eats away the abraded areas and abrasive material wears down corroded areas. Accelerated wear of the cutter is the result as the metal corrosion and abrasion hastens each other’s degradation process. With stainless steel, although the material is resistant to corrosion, it does not have the hardness to withstand an abrasive environment. The result is stainless steel wears fast in an abrasive environment.

Monster Metal solves these problems. Compared to alloy steel, Monster Metal is corrosion resistant which translates to less pitting. With less pitting, it avoids the cycle of abrasion wearing the pitted areas and corrosion eating the abraded areas. Compared to stainless steel, Monster Metal is significantly harder. In summary, Monster Metal excels in a combination corrosive and abrasive environment.

Additionally, when an application requires extremely hard cutters, Monster Metal is a great choice. Extremely abrasive applications typically specify the hardest cutter materials for the longest life. With a Rockwell HRC of 55 to 60, it is an excellent choice for those environments.
