Ecosorb odor neutralizer from OMI Industries uses natural ingredients to neutralize organic and inorganic malodors without the addition of harsh chemicals or fragrances. Tested to be safe for humans, animals and the environment, the product is designed to react on a molecular level at lift stations, in clarifiers, aeration basins or sludge operations. The neutralizer can be applied via atomization, nebulization or by infusion into end products. Custom- engineered solutions are available.
Fogging systems installed at bar screens and digesters are designed to tackle hydrogen sulfide in headworks and primary treatment, while fan or nozzle atomization systems are made to neutralize odors at wastewater septage dumping points and vented or open downstream locations.
“Our product is a proprietary blend of essential plant oils, a food grade emulsifier and water,” says Tom Minett, national sales director for OMI. “We’ve done testing that shows it is nontoxic to aquatic life like daphnia, fathead minnows and rainbow trout. And we’ve also done testing that shows it has no negative effect on bacteria.”
The product neutralizes odors by coming in contact with offending gas molecules.
It does so through an agent that enhances the solubility of the various offending gases, such as ammonia, sulfur dioxide, mercaptans, amines and indoles.
When diluted with water and broadcast via nebulization or atomization, the tiny water droplets contain a thin, oil skin that creates an electrostatic charge. This charge facilitates adsorption of the malodor molecules onto the droplet surface. With adsorption comes absorption where the gas is taken up by the droplet and held, eventually falling to the ground where it biodegrades.
Dilution rates range from 50:1 for extremely bad odors to 500:1 for less offensive gases. Minett says he’s even had wastewater treatment plants dilute the concentrate 1,000:1 with no odor complaints.
“Generally, the standard bell curve application rate is from 50:1 to 500:1,” he says. “So average would be around 200:1 dilution with water.”
The product also can be delivered through vaporization, where no water is used.
Because each wastewater plant has its own particular problem areas, OMI offers pilot studies and equipment rental to ensure the neutralizing agent works as designed.
Safe and effective both indoors and out, Ecosorb also has been adapted for consumer use under the Fresh Wave name. For more information, call 800/662-6367 or visit www.omi-industries.com.
