Natural Odor Neutralizer

BioWorld Odor Neutralizer from BioWorld Products LLC is an all-natural water-based liquid that eliminates offensive odors like sulfides and mer-captans at their source. Designed for large-scale applications, the environmentally safe concentrate is added to wastewater or diluted and fogged into the air using drum-mounted foggers and timers. 800/882-0225; www.bioworldusa.com.

Versatile solution

BIO ENERGIZER from Probiotic Solutions is designed to reduce odor, sludge, BOD, and costs in wastewater treatment plants and lagoons. At one-tenth the typical cost of dredging, handling and hauling, it can save thousands of dollars in operating costs, according to the manufacturer.

The product biochemically oxidizes sludge in lagoons while remaining on line and continuing to work. It also reduces the lagoon sludge blanket without draining, drying, dredging, handling, or hauling.

When used in activated sludge plants, it increases volatile solids destruction and improves decant volume and settleability for greater digester and reactor capacity, giving operators more room to waste solids and optimizing storage space during winter when land-applying biosolids is not an option. 800/961-1220; www.probiotic.com.

Emulsifiable Solvent

When used with biological products, Orange Aid from Chempace Corp. reduces odors in lift stations, trickling filters, sludge drying beds and sewage influent. The concentrated liquid inhibits the growth of microorganisms responsible for sulfide odors and dissolves grease, sludge and slime deposits. A citrus scent helps mask odors. 800/423-5350, ext. 13; www.chempace.com.

Earth-friendly

The ZABOCS biofilter and ZABOCS BTF (bio-trickling filter) from Siemens are green technologies that use sulfur-oxidizing bacteria to remove odors. Systems can treat up to 15,000 cfm. Multiple stages can be used to target hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and organic odors. In addition to operating without hazardous chemicals, these systems have low installation and operating costs. 858/487-2200; www.siemens.com/zabocs.

Floating Cover System

Insulated and uninsulated LemTec floating cover systems from Lemna Technologies Inc. provide effective odor control for tanks and lagoons by minimizing the transfer of odorous gases. An optional gas collection system completely contains gas.

Modular cover systems eliminate ballooning problems, adapt to fluctuating water levels, allow access to in-basin equipment, require no rainwater collection system (non-gas collection options), and have insulating value. The covers are easy and inexpensive to install and require no maintenance. 612/253-2000; www.lemnatechnologies.com.

No Environmental Issues

Odoreze wastewater odor control spray from Imtek Environmental Corp. destroys odoriferous gases like organic acids, ammonia, amines, mercaptans and hydrogen sulfide using natural ingredients. Applications include sewers, lift stations, grit chambers, aeration chambers, ponds and sludge. The super-concentrated product, diluted 1:1,000, is biodegradable, nontoxic and nonflammable, and contains no harmful chemicals or metals. All ingredients are on the FDA Generally Regarded as Safe list. 770/667-8621; www.noodor.com.

Biofiltration System

The Monashell biofiltration system from Bord na Mona is designed for wastewater pumping stations, wastewater treatment works, sludge-handling and treatment processors, as well as municipal solid waste and composting centers. Using crushed peat or waste seashells as media, the system is designed to maintain a neutral pH for the biological treatment of odorous sulfur compounds, high levels of hydrogen sulfide and organic sulfides in wastewater and industrial airstreams without the use of chemicals. 336/547-9338; www.bnm-us.com.

Tank and Lagoon Covers

Structurally supported cover systems from Geomembrane Technologies control odor and temperature, block sunlight, and prevent debris from entering tanks. The systems have a retractable sheet of high-strength, UV-protected, coated fabric tensioned across low-profile aluminum arches that span tank openings.

The fabric traps odors, yet is quickly detached or reattached. Off-gas removal piping connects to the cover, and rain and melting snow run off. Intermediate aluminum walkways divide long tank covers into retractable sections. Inspection or sampling hatches are available. 506/452-7304; www.gticovers.com.

Powerful Oxidizer

Hydrogen peroxide is a stronger oxidizer than chlorine, chlorine dioxide and potassium permanganate. Through catalysis, hydrogen peroxide is converted into hydroxyl radicals with reactivity second only to fluorine.

Cost-effective peroxide-regenerated iron technology from US Peroxide LLC incorporates hydrogen peroxide into current iron salt applications. It enhances traditional processes and reduces iron consumption. Three programs are available: PRI-SC for collection system sulfide control, PRI-CEPT for advanced primary settling and phosphorous removal, and PRI-DE for biosolids processing and digester enhancement. 877/346-4262; www.h2o2.com.

Activated Carbon Vent Filter

The passive, Wolverine Mega T (MT-20) biofilter from Simple Solutions Distributing LLC controls odors in air flows. Corrosion-resistant Schedule 40 PVC units work in lift station wet well vents, sewer line vents, or anywhere there is a vented air stream. A solar fan is available for forced air filtration. Operating costs are 13 cents per day based on a 10-cfm air flow and 10-ppm hydrogen sulfide concentration.

The 20-pound biofilter has a perforated disc carbon containment system with flow-through moisture-wicking design for longer carbon bed life. The 4-, 6- and 8-inch vent pipe models hold 20 pounds of carbon, and the 10-inch vent pipe unit holds 30 pounds. Filters accept socket, flange and female iron pipe thread couplings. 866/667-8465; www.stopsepticodor.com.

Nonbacterial

EnRiched Iron (ERI) from BioCOPE Inc. safely removes sulfide-based odors and reduces organic ones. Ferrous sulfate, micronutrients, minerals, trace elements and enzymes work as catalytic cofactors to increase the rate of enzymatic reactions. This combination reduces the pounds of iron needed to treat a line by 60 to 80 percent. The ferrous sulfate is 98 percent soluble.

The product also controls corrosion and destroys grease so it can’t reagglomerate down the line. Extensive field testing, controlled laboratory bench testing, and university-sponsored testing of the catalytic cofactor base proved its ability to reduce sludge, control odors, and degrade volatile fatty acids. It also increases settling and reduces primary clarifier grease. 800/299-2933: www.biocope.com.

Custom covers

Defender tank covers from Environetics Inc. cost less than fiberglass or aluminum and are custom-built. The covers are made from durable reinforced geomembrane. Clear-span structural aluminum frames provide strength, hinged hatches allow easy access, and modular construction enables rapid installation.

A low-profile design minimizes internal volume, and a mechanical attachment system provides a positive seal for odor containment. In addition, the opaque cover material keeps out UV light and prohibits algae growth. The covers also isolate thermal air masses to eliminate freezing. 815/838-8331; www.environeticsinc.com.

Healthy approach

Byo-Gon PX-109 from Byo-Gon is a non-toxic, 100 percent organic and biodegradable alkaloid discovered by the University of Hawaii that uses native bacteria present in wastewater systems to eliminate odor at the source.

The technology, which is not an enzyme, bacteria or micro-nutrient, is used in collection systems, compost operations, and wastewater treatment plants to develop healthy biological systems that prevent production of offensive odor. It is designed to provide a safe, healthy approach to odor control. 518/796-2772; www.byogon.com.
