Leading the Lab: Ashley Roberts' Journey From Chemist to Lab Manager

In this online exclusive video, Ashley Roberts, award-winning laboratory manager for Hampton Roads (Virginia) Sanitation District, walks viewers through her lab facility and tells the story of her career as she's risen ranks in the utility. "I was a chemist for five years, so my primary responsibility was to be the problem solver," says Roberts. "If anything went wrong, I was the one that was fixing it, or I was delegating how to fix things. But now, as a laboratory manager, I definitely have to take a step back and allow my chemists and my laboratory specialists to do that while coaching them and mentoring them toward the right answer." Read more about Roberts in the December issue of Treatment Plant Operator.

Capital Improvement Projects Tackled at Kansas Water Treatment Plant

In this online exclusive video, Rusty Tournade, water treatment plant supervisor for Eudora, Kansas, talks about some of the recent capital improvement projects undertaken at the facility. This year, they're working on installing a new lime feeder for softening, along with a number of new valves. “We have to come in and fill the towers up — we have to have the water plant shut off to install the valves,” says Tournade. “So the water plant has to be full so the town doesn’t run out of water.”

Kentucky Drinking Water Plant Looks Ahead to UV System Installation

In this online exclusive video, join Nathan Clark, senior superintendent of operations for the northern division of Kentucky American Water, and his staff of operators for a tour of the Kentucky River Station II Water Treatment Plant at Hardin’s Landing. In an area where providing a drought-resistant water supply is the main challenge, the Hardin’s Landing plant uses four intake pumps to pull water 400 feet from the Kentucky River before it moves on to four basins, tube settlers and five mixed-media filters. “The one spot that we didn’t have was for a UV system, so that’s what is in the works right now and being planned to put in in the next couple years,” says Clark.
