Customer: Northwestern Lancaster County Authority
Contaminant: Nitrate/Hardness
Flow Rate: 225 gpm

In August 2011, AdEdge Water Technologies LLC was contacted by Watek Engineering Corporation to design, manufacture and start up a nitrate removal system and a softening system for the Northwestern Lancaster County Authority in Manheim, Pennsylvania. The existing water system consisted of one well feeding water at 225 gpm to an elevated storage tank that feeds the distribution system. The AdEdge treatment systems fully integrate with other improvements to the Northwestern Lancaster Water Treatment Plant including a membrane filtration system, two clear wells and a new well pump. The raw water has an average nitrate level of 12 mg/L above the EPA primary MCL of 10 mg/L.

The AdEdge treatment system features a skid-mounted ADNO3 anion exchange package unit sized for a maximum design flow of 350 gpm. The model APUNO3-5460CS-2-AVH uses AdEdge ADNO3 IX media in a two vessel carbon steel configuration in parallel. Each 54-inch-diameter treatment vessel contains 55 cubic feet of AdEdge ADNO3 IX nitrate removal media. AdEdge ADNO3 IX is a NSF 61 certified anion exchange resin supplied in the chloride form as moist, tough, uniform spherical beads. The AdEdge nitrate removal system features a bypass line rated for 100 gpm that blends the treated and untreated water to attain a blended nitrate concentration at set point of less than 5 mg/L. The system was furnished complete with a regeneration/brine system to regenerate the AdEdge ADNO3 IX resin once daily to maximize the efficiency in removing the nitrates. Regeneration of the treatment system is automated by the programmable logic controller.

In addition to the AdEdge nitrate treatment system, AdEdge provided a packaged softening system using AdEdge ADSOFT IX softening media rated for a maximum design flow of 50 gpm. The model APUSOFT- 2465CO-2-285 uses AdEdge ADSOFT IX media in a two vessel composite vessel configuration. The AdEdge softening system uses the treated water from the nitrate removal system to feed the brine saturator during regeneration and for the membrane filtration system clean-in-place. The systems are equipped with automated control valves and harness, central control panel with programmable logic controller (PLC) and a color user interface screen. System features also include differential pressure switches, control panel and local gauges, flow sensors and totalizers, and a central hydraulic panel with sample ports for a complete functioning packaged unit.

The systems started up and successfully began operation in May 2012.
