Solids are continuously generated in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants during the process of organic pollutant degradation.

Adequate sludge treatment is required prior to disposal and a major pretreatment step is to reduce disturbing solids and the water content.

Mechanical sludge treatment primarily comprises the processes of sludge screening, thickening and dewatering. After these mechanical treatment steps, the process chain allows for drying of sewage sludge and later thermal utilization.
