Brockton Advanced Water Reclamation Facility in Brockton, Massachusetts, is a prime example of how YSI IQ SensorNet enhances wastewater treatment processes. This 14 mgd facility utilizes IQ SensorNet to optimize its four-stage Bardenpho aeration process, effectively managing a stringent total nitrogen effluent limit of 3 mg/L.
The facility’s aeration basins are equipped with a comprehensive suite of YSI sensors. Each aeration basin features three FDO sensors to monitor dissolved oxygen levels in the aerobic and post-aerobic zones. Additionally, two NitraVis UV-nitrate sensors are positioned in the pre- and post-anoxic zones to track denitrification: One SensoLyt pH sensor is located at the effluent to monitor pH and one AmmoLyt ion-selective electrode (ISE) ammonia sensor is placed in the aerobic zone where ammonia levels fluctuate between 1-10 mg/L daily.
Brockton AWRF’s north and south aeration basins utilize different control strategies. The north basins operate on an ammonia-based aeration control scheme with a variable setpoint of 1-5 mg/L NH4-N, guided by the AmmoLyt ISE sensor. In contrast, the south basins employ traditional DO control with a fixed 2.5 mg/L setpoint, relying on DO sensors near the end of the aerobic zone.
The Results
Data from June revealed that both trains effectively met effluent limits for total nitrogen, but the north basins achieved a 45% reduction in blower energy consumption per mgd compared to the south basins. This efficiency highlights significant energy savings with ammonia-based control.
