Problem: A municipal wastewater recycling project in Slater, Iowa, introduced an algae-based nutrient removal process designed to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus while generating a fertilizer product. While the treatment technology itself was successful, facility operators noticed hydrogen sulfide and mercaptan odors during algae dewatering and drying. The site was close to a residential neighborhood and a playground.
Solution: Industrial Odor Control engineered a dual-system adsorption odor control system instead of a single large unit. Two independent carbon scrubbers serve the 33,000-square-foot processing area. The configuration simplified transportation and installation while allowing odor control to remain in operation during servicing. Each system uses high-capacity blowers and is loaded with 6,500 pounds of high-performance activated carbon formulated for hydrogen sulfide removal in moist conditions. The units provide up to 17 air exchanges per hour, capturing and neutralizing odorous compounds at the source.
Result: The scalable solution protects the surrounding community, supports plant operations and aligns with the facility’s commitment to environmental stewardship. 973-846-7817; www.industrialodorcontrol.com
