A recent Microsoft report reveals that while free cybersecurity training is crucial for water and wastewater utilities, it is only effective when paired with hands-on coaching. Summarizing a 2023-2025 pilot program conducted alongside the Cyber Readiness Institute and the Center on Cyber and Technology Innovation, the report emphasized that underfunded, small-to-medium utilities need active assistance rather than just informational resources to build strong defenses against threats like ransomware.

The program's results highlighted the severe capacity constraints these facilities face, with only 43 of the 72 participating utilities completing the training due to limited staff time. However, the data showed a massive disparity in success based on support: 77% of those paired with a dedicated cyber coach finished the program, compared to just 23% who worked at their own pace.

Lawmakers Propose Federal Grant Program to Combat PFAS

A newly introduced bipartisan bill proposes a $1 billion federal grant program over five years to help municipal water utilities combat persistent pollutants like PFAS. The legislation would subsidize up to half the cost of implementing advanced filtration technologies with at least 49% of the funding specifically earmarked for disadvantaged and rural communities.

While the initiative seeks to alleviate the massive financial burden of water purification nationwide, its immediate impact on heavily affected areas remains uncertain.

DC Water to Conduct Aerial Assessment of Potomac Interceptor

DC Water is set to launch a month-long drone survey of the 54-mile Potomac Interceptor this week, marking the first time advanced aerial technology will map the pipeline. Using specialized Lidar scanners, the drones will fly up to 350 feet high to create highly detailed 3D models of the terrain along the route.

This unprecedented aerial inspection is a direct response to January's catastrophic pipe collapse, where old construction boulders caused a massive sewage overflow. By pinpointing rocky areas and other potential hazards from above, DC Water hopes to safely guide its ongoing effort to rehabilitate the aging interceptor.
