Over 170 environmental groups have petitioned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to monitor microplastics in drinking water under the Safe Drinking Water Act starting in 2026.
Advocates argue that increased awareness of microplastic pollution and its health risks demands urgent federal action. The EPA is required by law to initiate monitoring for emerging contaminants every five years. The proposed list of emerging contaminants will be assembled in 2025, while the final contaminants list will be published in 2026.
