The Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies honored 12 public drinking water systems with its top utility management awards. Platinum Awards for Utility Excellence were presented to:

• Minneapolis Water Works (Minnesota)

Gold Awards for Exceptional Utility Performance were presented to:

• South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority

• WaterOne (Kansas)

The Alaska Rural Water Association honored City of Homer operator Joe Young as Water Operator of the Year for an area with a population of more than 1,000.

Lucid Energy awarded Riverside, Calif., a 2011 Outstanding Energy Management Award for its ongoing evaluation of an in-pipe hydropower system.

Mike Muschinski and Doug Schwartz of the Oak Creek (Wis.) Water and Sewer Utility took top honors in the Wisconsin section of the American Water Works Association’s Top Ops contest. The duo will compete in the national competition at the AWWA’s annual meeting in Dallas in June.

The Putnam County Public Service District won the West Virginia Rural Water Association’s 2011 taste test award. The decision was based on odor, appearance, flavor, mouth feel, aftertaste and overall impression.

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) honored Dr. Mark LeChevallier, director of innovation and environmental stewardship for American Water, with the 2012 Abel Wolman Award of Excellence.
