The BDP Screw Press provides a significant improvement in dewatering performance and operational efficiency at the Hooksett Wastewater Treatment Facility in Hooksett, New Hampshire. The plant had previously operated a two-belt press that required frequent operator attention and created housekeeping challenges. The superintendent, Ken Conaty, was familiar with BDP Industries through his prior work in Merrimack, New Hampshire, with the BDP In-Vessel Composting System and was confident with BDP’s technology and remote and on-site service provided.

Underwood Engineers served as the project engineers, guiding a comprehensive evaluation that included multiple vendors and on-site pilot testing. Screw presses were selected over centrifuges for their lower maintenance requirements, reduced noise, and lower energy consumption. BDP was selected for their ability to integrate prethickening into the screw press design as well as providing remote and on-site service.

The upgrade has improved performance significantly. Dewatered cake increased from 16% to 18% with the screw press. Capture also increased from 80% to 95-98%, a gain attributed to the filtrate recycle system. The operation schedule has been optimized as well. They now typically run two, 24-hour long dewatering runs (Monday and Thursday), running fully unattended overnight. Polymer usage has improved through the use of a TSS meter in the sludge feed line and an electric polymer mixing valve.

The BDP Screw Press continues to provide Hooksett dependable operation with demonstrated benefits in solids capture, energy efficiency, and an improved environment for operators.
