Covington 01

The Covington Wastewater Treatment Plant in Covington, Ohio, has successfully commissioned a new Esmil MDQ-402(1)CLD multi-disk screw press, providing efficient and scalable sludge dewatering for the facility’s current needs — and those to come.

Challenge: Efficient WAS dewatering with room to grow

The Covington WWTP treats aerobically digested waste activated sludge and required a new system that could handle its current flow while anticipating future increases in capacity. Esmil’s team selected the MDQ-402(1)CLD multi-disk screw press — a compact and energy-efficient system that meets the plant’s present throughput targets of 30 gpm, while also accommodating future expansion.

The machine was engineered with one dewatering drum installed and mechanical and electrical provisions for a second drum already in place. This future-proofed design will allow the plant to expand its dewatering capacity seamlessly, without redesign or retrofitting — a hallmark of Esmil’s modular engineering philosophy.

Reliable performance from day one

All Esmil equipment was installed at the site prior to startup. Esmil’s field service personnel conducted a full startup protocol, including system inspection, calibration, and performance validation. Within one day, the system was fully operational, producing 225 pounds DS/hour of cake at the required 30 gpm flow rate.

Key advantages of MDQ technology

The Esmil MDQ multi-disk screw press is widely known for offering a unique combination of efficiency, simplicity and durability. Key advantages include:

  • Low energy consumption – With no high-speed rotating parts, energy usage is extremely low compared to centrifuges or belt presses.
  • Almost no washwater required – Thanks to a self-cleaning moving disc design, the system does not require continuous rinse water.
  • Compact footprint – Its compact and modular design allows for easy installation in tight spaces and scalable configurations.
  • Low noise and vibration – Quiet, slow-speed operation means minimal mechanical stress and safer working conditions.
  • Minimal operator attention – The fully automated system handles flow changes and polymer adjustments with little supervision.
  • Ideal for challenging sludges – Particularly effective for thickened, oily or anaerobically digested sludges that cause problems in other dewatering systems.

These features make the MDQ series an ideal fit for municipal facilities like Covington WWTP looking for long-term value, operational predictability, and future-ready design.

Another success for Esmil’s Modular MDQ line

The Covington installation adds to Esmil’s growing list of successful U.S. projects where thoughtful design, reliable performance, and future capacity planning go hand in hand. With no mechanical or electrical issues during commissioning, and seamless startup within 48 hours, Esmil once again demonstrated the value of U.S.-supported equipment backed by responsive service.
