Noncontact blower

The High-Speed Turbo Blower from APG-Neuros operates an oil-free noncontact air bearing system, making aeration more energy efficient and reducing operating costs. The blower reaches flow rates up to 20,000 scfm and design-discharge pressures up to 15.5 psig. All models are equipped with a PLC, and power ratings range from 30 to 700 hp. Dual-core models (400 to 700 hp) combine two cores in the same unit to offer a wide flow range and turndown rate of up to 76 percent. The blower has a 55 percent smaller footprint than conventional blowers. 866/592-9482; www.apg-neuros.com.

Multiple processes

Activated sludge wastewater treatment systems from Ashbrook Simon-Hartley use the conventional activated sludge process, extended aeration process and completely mixed activated sludge process. The conventional process includes an aeration tank with a long, narrow configuration so that the wastewater flows through the tank and approximates plug flow. The extended process provides 24 hours of aeration coupled with a defined settling period to achieve high-quality effluent.

In the completely mixed process, the aeration tank is mixed with air blown in through diffusers. The tank geometry and mechanical mixing are designed to approximate a completely mixed reactor. The main applications are sludge flows of high concentration or hard-to-oxidize waste. The complete mixing dilutes such flows into the entire tank’s contents more rapidly than a plug flow design. Flow capacities range from 5,000 gpd to 3.0 mgd. 800/547-7273; www.as-h.com.

Screw blowers

ZS screw blowers from Atlas Copco offer an energy-efficient range for air blowing applications. The blowers use internal compression instead of external compression. The technology is a scaled version of the principles used in an air compressor: paired male and female rotors trap and then squeeze air between them. Air is compressed internally during each rotation. The oil-free compressors have flow ranges from 176 to 2,700 cfm and pressure ranges from 4.35 to 17 psig. 803/817-7479; www.efficiencyblowers.com.

Suspended solids meter

The multipurpose Suspended Solids Meter from Markland Specialty Engineering monitors the concentration of primary, secondary and return activated sludges in open-top tanks, pipelines, SBRs and sand/membrane filters. It can measure sludge too thick for optical methods, or thinner than the backwash from drinking water plants. Using nonradioactive ultrasounds, it requires no approvals. The self-cleaning, low-maintenance sensor is nonclogging, smooth-bore and nonintrusive.

The meter automatically shuts off the desludge pump before sludge becomes too thin, resulting in optimum density for feeding to digesters, belt presses and centrifuges. This enables correct dosing and calculation of solids mass flow. Readings are not affected by color of particulates or fluid. The system can be supplied as an inline spool piece or throw-in style probe. Free testing of samples is available with follow-up report. 905/873-7791; www.sludgecontrols.com.
