With the placement of the Prestonsburg (Kentucky) Water Filtration Plant next to a school and residential area, plant manager Donald Compton says safety was a big factor in switching away from the use of chlorine gas for disinfection. “When we had cylinders of chlorine gas on site it was always an issue — what if we had a catastrophic leak?” Compton says the plant switched to a MIOX system and plans to expand it this year.
