Safety Concerns at Kentucky Plant Call for Unique Solutions

Safety concerns and variable quality from its source river force the Prestonsburg (Kentucky) Water Filtration Plant to think outside the box

With the placement of the Prestonsburg (Kentucky) Water Filtration Plant next to a school and residential area, plant manager Donald Compton says safety was a big factor in switching away from the use of chlorine gas for disinfection. “When we had cylinders of chlorine gas on site it was always an issue — what if we had a catastrophic leak?” Compton says the plant switched to a MIOX system and plans to expand it this year. Join him on a tour of the facility as he explains the pros of the MIOX system and talks about some of the unique challenges the city faces with its unpredictable source water from the Big Sandy River.
