Wastewater treatment facilities have long sought the elusive formula for efficient sludge dewatering, aiming to find the most cost-effective methods and equipment, while minimizing the most unacceptable downsides — e.g., maintenance and disposal costs, odor and noise levels, and power consumption. When it comes to mechanical dewatering, plants often consider belt presses, centrifuges, screw presses and rotary drum thickeners. And yet, there’s no silver bullet.
But what about the sludge you are feeding to your mechanical dewatering units?
Crap in, crap out, they say.
Meaning poorly conditioned sludge, sludge with foreign solids and/or clumps of fibrous materials all ensure your dewatering units must take more abuse, if not incurring immediate maintenance issues, while diminishing the dewatering equipment’s performance in the form of reduced dryness and inconsistent caking.
Traditionally, adding polymer has been the band-aid for making sludge cooperate in dewatering feed, but that comes with additional costs and separate downsides while not addressing some of the core concerns with clumpy, solids-laden sludge.
What other options do you have?
This is where plants have proven that adding a macerator to the dewatering feed process can provide dramatic upsides that far outweigh the notion of simply not wanting to add more equipment to the process. When you learn that certain maceration units can remove heavy solids and condition sludge in a way that reduces maintenance requirements and improves the dewatering results, it’s tough not to consider this option.
Advanced technologies such as the Vogelsang RotaCut, a macerator or wet grinder, have nearly two decades of proven experience in this application. The unique cutting action of this unit is unmatched in the industry. “In our experience, having provided pumps and macerators to numerous dewatering OEMs and package builders over the years, adding a RotaCut to the feed line pays for itself in terms of decreased downtime and more consistent dewatering results,” says Vogelsang’s wastewater OEM manager.
Unlock ‘homogenization’
In most sludge applications, homogenization is the goal. ‘Good sludge’ is uniform or homogenized. It flows better and is easier to process.
Macerators such as RotaCut utilize a cutting screen and spinning blades to ensure particle sizes are small and uniform, resulting in a sludge mixture that is much more consistent. This contrasts with grinders that are geared at large solids in the earlier stages of wastewater treatment. Whereas the uniformity provided by RotaCut is crucial in pumping, distributing solids into dewatering equipment, and in the drying function itself.
The cutting action provided by the RotaCut assists in the separation of solids from liquids, resulting in a drier dewatered cake and lower disposal costs. Furthermore, this step ensures the polymer is fully integrated and generates a more predictably flowing sludge.
Heavy solids removal
While it might not be common to see metal objects, rocks or other heavy solids in this stage of the process, it does happen. Bolts, hardware and even tools are among other common foreign solids that find their way in. Sending a few bolts into an expensive and high-maintenance centrifuge can be extremely costly. This is where RotaCut’s integrated heavy-solids removal pot can save you thousands in damage and downtime. Incoming heavy solids drop down into a collection pot for easy removal, allowing the sludge to move through the cutting elements and down the pipe.
The integration of RotaCut Macerators by Vogelsang enhances sludge dewatering and homogenization. Improved dewatering efficiency translates directly into reduced sludge volume, lower disposal costs, and fewer maintenance issues with your dewatering units. Unlike other grinder technology and units claiming to shred or chop, Vogelsang’s RotaCut macerator was explicitly designed for sludge conditioning and has a track record of being low-maintenance and easy to service. By effectively addressing the challenges posed by solid contaminants and nonuniform sludge consistency, the RotaCut macerator can ensure peak performance from your dewatering equipment.
