The Montpelier Wastewater Treatment Plant was looking to make a change to their mechanical dewatering. The facility wanted equipment that was enclosed and could offer containment of solids, filtrate and odors, while also being able to run unattended. Following an on-site pilot test, BDP’s screw press was chosen because it could offer these qualities, along with drier cake solids than the existing system.

BDP Industries manufactured and supplied two DSP-30 Screw Presses. Over the past few years, the facility has sent two different sludge types to the screw presses: anaerobically digested solids and septage. The anaerobic sludge has an incoming feed solids of 3% and produces cake solids of 24-26%. The septage sludge has an incoming feed solids of 1.0-1.5% and produces cake solids of 26-30%. The facility runs each screw press for 10 to 16 hours a day. The automation of the screw press allows them to operate the presses overnight and unattended.

These screw presses also included optional prethickening that is integrated into the screw press design. Operators viewed the optional prethickeners as “cheap insurance,” allowing the screw presses to process high hydraulic loading rates if the feed solids are ever uncharacteristically low or during upset conditions. The integrated prethickening allows for increased throughput without the need for additional footprint or additional screw presses.

The BDP screw press is fully designed, fabricated, assembled, programmed and tested at the BDP factory in Greenwich, New York.  All parts of the screw press are made in-house. BDP is a UL-rated panel shop that builds and programs all control panels at the main factory.  Buy-out items such as cylinders, gearboxes, bearings, motors and electrical switches are standard items with the OEM part numbers provided by BDP for local sourcing by the customer.
