Compactor option can help reduce energy, hauling costs

No matter how efficiently your headworks system can screen and remove solids, there’s still the matter of dealing with the solids once they are removed. Hauling and application can get costly. That’s where a new wastewater washer compactor option from Duperon can help. The unit is designed to reduce energy usage, along with debris hauling and maintenance costs.

The company is now offering a discharge extension option for its washer compactor that transports compacted debris collected by a bar screen up to 40 feet in any direction, even vertically, without the energy usage and layout challenges of a traditional motorized conveyance system. According to Mark Turpin, Duperon president, the technology eliminates maintenance requirements and helps manage compacted screenings without additional equipment.

“It began as a commitment to improving one customer’s situation and evolved into an option that can help customers eliminate the need for an expensive, high-maintenance conveyance system that takes up valuable floor space,” Turpin says. “The benefit to one customer is now available to all.”

The discharge extension option relies on gravity for resistance. The result is consistent, effective compression through a customized chute, acting as a conveyor to guide the debris plug to a different location inside or out of the building. Debris forms into a column that is routed by the vertical chute. The weight of the plug column provides the resistance for additional compaction. Since the debris is nearly fully compacted prior to its arrival in the chute, vertical elevations are achieved with little or no further resistance.

Doug Koss is the operations supervisor at the 10 mgd West Bay County Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bay City, Michigan, where the first discharge extension option was installed. They wanted to eliminate the conveyance of debris while also drying it to reduce landfill hauling costs. The application required a 90-degree angle of ascent on the chute, which travels directly up the wall for more than 30 feet before transitioning into a horizontal stretch and traveling through the wall for disposal.

“Our screenings are now very dried out by the time they reach the dumpster,” Koss says. “Before we installed the unit, we’d have to manage a dumpster with wet garbage and rags. It just makes a nice, dry discharge, and it’s all in one piece of equipment.” 800-383-8479;
