The DCist website reports that D.C. Water on July 18 celebrated the 75th anniversary of its Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. The facility is the largest of its kind in the world, handling some 300 mgd on a 153-acre property. The plant serves the nation’s capital as well as parts of Virginia and Maryland. Before the plant began operating in 1937, the city’s sewage ran straight into the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. At first the plant provided only primary treatment.
