Illinois American Water will receive the AWWA’s 2011 Communications Achievement Award for its outreach on proper pharmaceutical disposal. The award recognizes AWWA member organizations for fostering and supporting public outreach programs and integrating public affairs as a core element of utility planning and management.
The goals of the Illinois American Water program include increasing awareness and reducing pharmaceuticals in water through community pharmaceutical disposal programs. Through these programs, residents are encouraged to drop off unwanted medications so they can be incinerated, as the U.S. EPA recommend.
