Molecular diagnostic tools including qPCR and 16s Microbial Community Analysis represent a leap forward in biological wastewater monitoring as they directly measure biological wastewater system microbial populations. Previously only used in research settings, molecular testing is now available for use in treatment systems with complex operations and more stringent treatment goals. This presentation covers the basics of molecular testing, emphasizing real-world applications and how to interpret the molecular testing results.
Paul Campbell is a co-founder of Aster Bio, a Houston-based biotech company providing microbial products and molecular analytical services to industrial and municipal wastewater treatment operations. With 30 years’ molecular biology experience, Campbell oversees all laboratory activities, including the development of new analytical tools and microbial products. Campbell earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University, a Ph.D. in biochemistry and cell biology from Rice University and an MBA from the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University.
