Wiseman and his team face a total nitrogen limit in a new permit, due in 2016. Instead of waiting to see the actual limit, and instead of resigning themselves to a costly plant upgrade, they set out last year to see how low they could push nitrogen output at the wastewater treatment plant with a biological nutrient removal process using existing equipment.
