Tragedy recently struck El Paso, Texas' Roberto R. Bustamante Wastewater Treatment Plant. A 34-year-old senior technician at the plant died after becoming trapped in a confined space.
While local reports haven't given details of how the incident happened, El Paso Water officials confirmed the death and expressed condolences to the victim's family.
Wisconsin Students Impress at CSWEA Competition
Students from Milwaukee's Marquette University engineering department shone brightly at the recent Central States Water Environment Association design competition. One team triumphed in the Global Water Stewardship category by designing a wastewater treatment system for a Costa Rican community, considering its unique needs and proposing alternative solutions. Their win marks the third consecutive year Marquette has bagged the top spot in this category.
Another Marquette team impressed in the WEF wastewater category, proposing a pyrolysis machine design for Milwaukee's wastewater treatment facility. This innovative design aims to convert sludge into biochar with various potential applications.
Michigan Governor Announces Water Infrastructure Funding
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently announced a $290 million expansion of the MI Clean Water Plan. The plan supports critical water infrastructure projects like lead service line removals, rehabilitation and upgrades to drinking water and wastewater plants, improvements to sewer systems, and more.
The money will be split between the state’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund and Drinking Water State Revolving Fund and will be available through loans and low interest financing this year for projects currently in the State Revolving Fund process.
