How Twin-Shaft Grinders Are Protecting Lift Stations

Bar screens and chopper pumps are a traditional solution to solids reduction in lift stations. However, bar screens are not enough of a solution, and chopper pumps are the wrong equipment for the job. Wastewater treatment plants have found that twin-shaft grinder technology is the only way to effectively reduce solids at the lift station.

Your first line of defense against coarse solids damaging downstream equipment starts at the lift station. If you can get a handle on potential problems up front, you can save your equipment from undue wear, clogs, backups and failures.

Bar screens may stop some larger solids from entering your sewage system, but the most troublesome solids will render them useless. Beside the added work of having to clear the screens, items like “flushable” wipes, diapers, plastic bags and other fibrous materials may slip through the bars and make their way to jam pumps. These items may be partially stopped by a screen, but then they can wrap around the bars to cause ragging and blockages that are difficult to untangle and remove.

Chopper pumps would seem like a good way to combine two actions into one. But the truth is that chopper pumps are not robust enough to adequately reduce solids commonly found in lift stations. They cannot handle large solids or are limited to what size can be processed. When chopper and grinder pumps clog or fail, you have to shut down and drain the well and remove the pump. However, an XRipper grinder can be easily pulled, serviced and dropped back in using the rail system.

The Vogelsang XRipper XRC twin-shaft grinder reduces solids at the lift station and performs better than bar screens and chopper pumps to protect equipment downstream. The XRipper with its Sewer Integration Kit is placed with the inlet to the wet well. Coarse materials enter the XRipper where its monolithic ripper rotors easily grind the material, shredding it to a manageable size.

Making easy on-site service a reality

The grinder is positioned directly in front of the intake or outlet. The grinder can be used in straight wall, round wall or in-channel systems, and can use your existing rail system. With this unit’s lifting bail, it can be hoisted up the guide rails and out of the sewer for easy on-site maintenance. The XRipper is 100% repairable in the field and takes a fraction of the time to service compared to other twin-shaft grinders. Vogelsang cut the service time by designing XRipper units with 40% and 50% fewer wet-end parts, including one-piece ripper rotors and cartridge mechanical seal that are simple and reliable.

The secrets to reliable performance

Low speed and high torque allow the XRipper to operate with low drive power. The cutting elements are precision-machined as a single piece Monolithic Ripper Rotor. They are made from specially processed steel that is formulated to be ductile inside with an incredibly hard outer surface. This creates a cutting element that is highly resistant to impact abrasion while retaining sharp edges for superior cutting performance. The XRC unit is capable of processing up to 4,314 gpm, and features a two-year warranty, including wear parts, that is unheard of in the industry.
