Pentair Flow & Filtration Solutions introduced a new line of vertical turbine solids-handling pumps and a submersible chopper pump at WEFTEC 2016 in New Orleans, Sept. 26-28.

The vertical turbine pumps with screw-type impeller (VTSH-SCR) from the Fairbanks Nijhuis brand are designed to pass solids, sludge, trash, and long, stringy materials. The pumps use a proven induced-flow impeller design, allowing for a wider variable-speed operating range than conventional solids handling pumps. This provides operators flexibility to adjust for unanticipated flow demand or suspension velocities without clogging.

The pumps provide flows up to 3,500 gpm. The standard 316 stainless steel screw impellers and liner with 25 percent chrome iron provide long life and reduce maintenance. They are an extension of the brand’s vertical turbine solids handling pump line, delivering flows up to 80,000 gpm.

The Hydromatic Premium Efficient (HPE) submersible chopper pump has a cutting design that makes sure stringy waste and debris are cut into small pieces, letting the waste flow freely through the pump. Its premium efficient motor delivers high starting torque for reduced risk of clogging during start-up. A semi-open impeller provides high solids handling capability and increased efficiency.

The pump’s cutting blade and plate are made from 440 SST hardened to 57-60 Rockwell C for long life and are replaceable. The blades are serrated for effective cutting without sharpening, and the adjustable cutting plate ensures optimal alignment for the best cutting performance.

The HPE series represents what the company calls the first oil-cooled, premium efficient line of submersible solids handling pumps, providing municipal customers with low ownership cost, long motor life and low maintenance.

“Pentair’s premium efficient Class H oil-filled motors run up to 40 degrees C cooler than comparable premium efficiency air-cooled motors,” says Brian Alexander, senior product marketing manager. “For the municipality, that will translate into longer motor life and less downtime.”

The motors provide high wire-to-water efficiencies, leading to estimated annual energy savings of up to $6,000.

The company’s Hydromatic seal leak probes provide early moisture detection warnings to help minimize unplanned maintenance. A shaft grounding ring protects against currents induced by variable-frequency drives to prevent premature bearing failure. The pumps also have quick-disconnect cables and cartridge seals and maintenance-free bearings and terminal blocks.
