Editor's Note: Innovation was a big theme at WEFTEC 2014. We'll be featuring a few of the new and better technologies found in the exhibit hall at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Watch each day for the Innovation logo to learn more about new products displayed at the clean-water industry’s flagship exhibition and conference.

WesTech Engineering highlighted the WWETCO FlexFilter high-rate compressible media filter for various wastewater treatment purposes. It can be used in dual-purpose applications, providing tertiary treatment during normal flows and switching to treat storm surges during rain events. Other applications include stormwater runoff treatment, primary treatmen, and raw water pretreatment.

The filter uses synthetic compressible media, compressed by lateral hydraulic force applied by the incoming water. This method eliminates mechanically actuated components and provides tapered media compression. The varied porosity of the compressed media bed allows increased filtering capacity and the ability to treat streams with high solids content. A backwash system with air scour and specialized backwash troughs minimizes backwash volume.
