For decades, stories of massive alligators lurking in city sewer systems have fascinated (and terrified) people. But is there any truth to these urban legends?

While the idea of sewer gators makes for a great campfire story, actual cases are rare. In warm southern states like Florida, alligators sometimes end up in storm drains or canals, but they’re not setting up home in your city’s wastewater system. Harsh conditions, lack of food, and toxic gases make it nearly impossible for large animals to survive underground for long.

So, what does live in sewers? Rats, snakes, and even some species of fish and frogs have been known to navigate storm drains and wastewater tunnels. Bacteria and microbes, on the other hand, thrive in the nutrient-rich environment.

While sewer alligators may be more myth than reality, wastewater workers still encounter their fair share of strange and unexpected surprises underground. Have you ever seen something wild in the sewers?
