Reader’s Digest magazine is out with a story that lists “10 Jobs Americans Can’t Live Without” – and number two on the list is water/wastewater treatment plant and system operator.
“Water and liquid waste treatment plants require near-constant supervision in order to ensure that customers receive safe water,” the article says. “As a result, system operators must either work or be on call at all hours. Plants are highly regulated and can face a number of problems. Storms can cause flooding in sewers, and water can be tainted by chemicals. Plant operators are responsible for all of this."
The article says there are 108,330 water/wastewater operators employed in the nation and that their median income is $40,770. The other nine top jobs we can’t live without are:
1. Registered nurse
3. Firefighter
4. Railroad conductor and yardmaster
5. Telecommunications equipment installer and repairer
6. Air traffic controller
7. Nuclear power reactor operator
8. Police and sheriff’s patrol officer
9. Electric power line repairer
10. Correctional officer and jailer
