In the United States, iron and manganese are some of the most common culprits of groundwater contamination. Typically considered nuisance contaminants, these naturally occurring elements can cause staining, discoloration and taste issues for municipal residents as well as problems with boiler feeds, cooling towers and industrial remediation for industrial and commercial customers. Even municipal wastewater systems can experience buildup of these elements in waterlines and pumps.

Although problematic in other respects, neither element causes adverse health problems, even in high concentrations. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers both elements as secondary contaminants, and has recommended secondary maximum contaminant levels of .3 mg/L for iron and .05 mg/L for manganese.

The AdEdge treatment solution
AdEdge Water Technologies uses AD26 oxidation/filtration media or ADGS+ coagulation/filtration media for the removal of these contaminants. AdEdge has installed hundreds of systems with both types of media throughout the country. In the village of Corona, New Mexico, the AD26 system drastically reduced iron and manganese levels that were making washing dishes, doing laundry and taking a shower difficult. Another AD26 system, at the McGraw Hill data center in East Windsor, New Jersey, receives water nearly 22 hours per day to treat up to 110 gpm, which keeps iron and manganese levels below treatment goals.

In Aurora, Oregon, AdEdge started up a system using ADGS+ media to treat an iron and manganese contamination, as well as elevated arsenic levels. The system has since reduced all three contaminants to well below the treatment goals.
