Q: How does the biottta treatment process work?
A:
Biottta is a natural process that cultivates native microorganisms found in groundwater aquifers. To survive in the aquifer, these microbes adapted to feed on inorganic and organic constituents that often pose a health risk to humans. Biottta promotes the growth of these benign bacteria, and in turn, they completely consume targeted contaminants. The microbial digestive process of nitrates results in low levels of nitrogen gas.

A good analogy would be likening biottta to a coral reef. Coral reefs support rich environments for plants and marine life to flourish. Biottta is similar in that it creates the right conditions for microbes to flourish and act in their natural ways.

Q: What applications benefit from the biottta process?
A:
Nitrates are a significant concern for small-community systems in North America, especially in agriculturally active areas. Traditional nitrate- and nitrite-removal processes produce a concentrated wastewater stream. Nitrates often return to the drinking water supply unless a costly wastewater management plan is put in place. The cycle of treatment with nitrate concentrate returning to the water supply is repeated and intensifies over time. The biottta process does not perpetuate this cycle as the process completely destroys nitrate.

Q: Why should customers choose biottta over other treatment methods?
A:
Operating costs are very competitive — if not lower — than traditional drinking water treatment. In cases where wastewater is transported or a secondary treatment process is required for multi-contaminant reduction, biottta is the lowest cost option for small-community water systems. The biottta treatment process can be applied across a wide range of contaminants. Unlike ion exchange and reverse osmosis, biottta does not require additional treatment stages for contaminant removal.

Q: Are AdEdge case studies available?
A: You can view a video case study of the Lincoln Pipestone Rural Water project on YouTube. LPRW is a community water system in Minnesota that was in violation of its nitrate discharge limit as a result of wastewater from its existing reverse osmosis system. LPRW found a more affordable and sustainable solution with biottta.

Q: Anything else that would be important to mention? A: Biottta has gone from benchtop testing to full-scale implementation over the past 16 years. Developmental hurdles have been solved, and biottta has gained regulatory approval in states such as California and Minnesota. However, obstacles still exist in gaining widespread acceptance in the United States. One such obstacle is overcoming decades of doubt that an affordable and sustainable solution for nitrate removal exists. Biottta is leading the way in changing these perceptions.
