This Q&A continues the discussion of arsenic treatment options with AdEdge Water Technologies.

Why do you need to oxidize prior to treatment?
For optimized performance, especially with adsorption as arsenic capacity is better with Arsenic (V), the arsenic removal process is best utilized with a pre-chlorination system to achieve the treatment requirements to oxidize arsenic (III) to arsenic (V) if present, or if a disinfectant residual is required.

What can be said about the U.S. EPA arsenic demonstration program?
The U.S. EPA developed and evaluated innovative treatment technologies to help meet the new standard of 10 ppb arsenic. These demonstrations helped states and water utilities make informed decisions about treatment effectiveness and the cost of these approaches. AdEdge participated in 12 U.S. EPA arsenic demonstration projects in the mid-2000s, more than any company in the marketplace. Reports for all the EPA sites are available.

When did the arsenic rule come into effect?
In 2001, the EPA adopted a new standard lowering the permissible amount of arsenic in drinking water. This research improved the assessment and control of arsenic contamination. The limit was set at 10 ppb well below the previous limit of 50 ppb set back in the 1940s.

How does arsenic end up in water naturally?
Arsenic is naturally found in Earth’s crust and rock formations. When water makes contact with rocks or soil with high arsenic concentrations, a chemical reaction will occur and cause arsenic to mobilize in the water.
