A team of water-quality professionals representing the Water Environment Federation competed April 19 against 20 teams from South America in the 6th Olimpiadas Sanitarias competition, held as part of the 18th AIDIS Congreso Argentino Saneamiento y Medio Ambiente at the Costa Salguero in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Modeled after Operations Challenge, the WEF annual competition for wastewater operations and maintenance professionals, Olimpiadas Sanitarias showcased the skills needed to clean water safely and successfully through events testing ability in areas such as collections, laboratory procedures, maintenance, and safety.
The WEF Equipo KSB-Hydro team included top talent from teams now competing in the Operations Challenge and represented more than 100 years of experience in the water- quality industry. They pitted their precision, speed, and skills against 18 teams from Argentina and two from Colombia. Several Argentine teams have competed in the WEF Operations Challenge since 2003. Equipo KSB-Hydro team members include:
- Dale Burrow (TRA CReWSers, Texas Class A Wastewater License, Interceptor System Specialist from Central Regional Wastewater System, Trinity River Authority, Dallas, Texas).
- Rey Davila (Dallas Aquatechs, Texas Class A Wastewater License, Plant Supervisor from Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant, City of Dallas.
- Paul Johnson (LA Wrecking Crew, California State Water Resources Control Board or SWRCB Grade III Certification, Foreman from Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, Carson, Calif.).
- Jeffrey Valdes (California SWRCB Grade V Certification, Plant Supervisor from San Jose Creek Water Reclamation Plant, Whittier, Calif.).
